Have you wondered why despite taking good care of yourself that you suffer from persistent fatigue, a lightheadedness when standing up, frequent illness, brain fog, poor sleep quality, and weight gain around the midsection,? It could be that your adrenal glands are begging for attention. At least ⅔ of the population have suffered some or all of these symptoms or more because of adrenal gland fatigue.  Today, I'm uncovering the critical role your adrenal glands play in maintaining energy levels and how nurturing them can transform your health and vitality. I will also describe practical and energy healing methods for improving them.

Thirty years ago, I found myself in a constant state of exhaustion. Despite getting plenty of rest, I had trouble getting up in the morning, I couldn’t think straight, and I would almost black out when I stood up.  Sometimes my whole body would tremble and I’d have to hang onto something so I didn’t collapse onto the floor.  It was frightening.

I was taking good care of my physical self.   It wasn't until I took certain steps to take care of my adrenal glands that these and many more symptoms disappeared and I got my old youthful self back.   Listen in as I outline what the adrenal glands do for you, symptoms of adrenal fatigue, how they got exhausted, and what to do about it both practically and healing methods.   It’s not just about reacting to stressful situations or “fight or flight."  It’s so much more.

Introduction to Adrenal Glands and Their Functions

Your body has several redundant systems, including those for energy production.  The first place that your energy fails is with the adrenal glands.  The other systems also get fatigued, which include your liver and your thyroid gland.  These are also impacted when your adrenal glands falter.

What and where are your adrenal glands?  The adrenal glands are small, triangular-shaped glands located on top of each kidney, playing a pivotal role in maintaining your body's equilibrium and other essential functions.  They are powerhouse hormone producing glands:

One of its primary hormones is cortisol, which is essential for regulating metabolism, energy production, and maintains blood sugar levels. Other hormones include:

Aldosterone which helps the kidneys regulate blood pressure by controlling the amount of salt in the blood and tissues.

Epinephrine and norepinephrine: Also known as adrenaline and noradrenaline, these hormones increase heart rate, blood pressure, and blood pumping from the heart. They also help break down fat and increase blood sugar levels.

Androgens and estrogen:  These hormones are precursors that the body can convert into sex hormones.Estrogen plays a role in reproductive and sexual development, while progesterone stabilizes menstrual cycles and prepares the body for pregnancy.

They also regulate the immune system, inflammation, and the stress response and much more.  If they don’t function well, you may not get restful sleep, meaning you always feel tired and your thinking is foggy.

A. Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue: How to Know If It’s a Problem for You

Adrenal fatigue is often subtle and can be mistaken for regular tiredness or stress. But, there’s a distinct pattern of symptoms that indicate a problem with your adrenal glands.

One of the most common signs is feeling overwhelmingly tired, even after a full night’s sleep. You might struggle to get out of bed in the morning and feel sluggish throughout the day. For example, I would finally wake up at 10 to 11 am but my head would be on the desk, asleep by 2 or 3 in the afternoon.

A hallmark symptom is feeling lightheaded or dizzy upon standing up quickly. It’s not low blood pressure as you might think.  As I mentioned, There were times when my whole body trembled just from standing up but my blood pressure was on the high side.  It really means there’s not enough aldosterone to pump up your blood pressure when you’re standing up.

Other symptoms include:

You may crave salty snacks because your adrenals maintain the balance of sodium, potassium, and water in the body.

You may have frequent colds or infections since cortisol helps modulate your immune response: individuals with adrenal fatigue often have weakened immune systems.

Or you may have chronic body aches, joint pain, and muscle stiffness. Or have mood swings or be irritable.  Brain fog and inability to concentrate. A thicker middle and be sensitive to noise.

You may have dark circles under your eyes, have no cold tolerance, or digestive issues.

If you have some or all of these symptoms, here’s how your body may have failed.

B. How Adrenal Glands Fail
First off, I want to mention: There is a condition called Addison's disease, also known as primary adrenal insufficiency, is caused by damage to the adrenal glands that prevents them from producing enough hormones.  This needs to be treated with hormone replacement and salt.  Yes, here you have to go to a doctor.  However, most adrenal fatigue is preventable and naturally treatable.

Understanding the causes of adrenal glands fatigue or failure is key to restoring your vitality.

  1. Chronic stress is the number one reason adrenal glands falter. While short-term stress triggers the necessary “fight-or-flight” response, prolonged stress keeps the adrenal glands constantly putting out cortisol, which eventually exhausts them.  In fact, stress is a main factor in most illnesses, whether it’s emotional or physical.
  2. Chronic stress is also caused by Lack of Sleep and Restorative Downtime.  Sleep is when the body repairs itself, restoring hormone balance and replenishing energy reserves. Poor or insufficient sleep forces the body to maintain higher cortisol levels to keep you alert during the day, adding an extra burden to the adrenals.
  3. Inadequate nutrition leading to nutritional deficiencies is usually caused by diets rich in processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats.  High sugar or refined carbohydrate intake leads to insulin spikes, then rapid drops in blood sugar, causing the adrenal glands to compensate.  It can also be caused by prolonged low caloric intake and fasting.
  4. Processed foods with nitrates, msg, preservatives, colors, artificial sweeteners, and flavorings.
  5. Stimulants such as caffeine, drugs, and energy drinks are used to make up for lack of sleep or lack of energy because of poor health.  Here, you are burning the candle at both ends.

Taking steps to care for your adrenal glands is crucial for reclaiming energy and sustaining well-being.

C. Practical Steps to Improve Adrenal Health
Adrenal health is essential for maintaining energy, mood stability, and a resilient immune system. Supporting the adrenal glands through dietary choices, lifestyle modifications, and targeted supplementation can enhance recovery from adrenal fatigue and improve overall vitality.

1. Food for Adrenal Health
Eat meals regularly.  As I mentioned, going too long without food, such as very low calorie diets or fasting for days at a time, taxes your adrenal glands.

The foundation of restoring adrenal health lies in a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients.  This provides your adrenal glands the building blocks it needs to repair and produce its hormones.  Focus on including foods that are high in

  • Vitamin C: Found in citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers, and leafy greens, vitamin C is a key antioxidant that helps mitigate oxidative stress and supports cortisol production.
  • The following foods are sources of B vitamins: pork (B1, B7), nuts (B1, B3, B9), legumes (B1, B3), yogurt (B2, B12), avocado (B5, B9), chickpeas (B6), and beef (B7, B12).  These are crucial for energy production and nervous system support.
  • Magnesium plays a role in over 300 biochemical reactions, including stress response and energy production.  It is present in foods like almonds, spinach, and avocados.
  • Reduce Stimulant Intake: energy drinks, which can overtax the adrenal glands by triggering excessive cortisol release.

2. Sleep:  Prioritize Quality Sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours of deep sleep starting before 11 pm to keep you from using cortisol to stay awake. Creating a restful environment by reducing noise and light exposure can aid the natural production of hormones regulated by the adrenal glands.

3. These activities support your adrenals and reduce stress:

  • Light Exercise: Activities such as walking, stretching, and tai chi help maintain blood circulation and energy without overburdening the adrenals. Enjoying a walk in nature or along the beach restores you beyond just exercise, it revitalized your spirit.. See the beauty of nature all around you. Watch a sunset, listen to the wind blow, smell the flowers, enjoy the birds.
  • Visualization and Deep Breathing: Taking breaks to breathe deeply, using your diaphragm to pull air deeply into your lungs while visualizing calming scenes effectively reduces stress and recharges the body’s energy stores.  This operates like a mini meditation and can calm the adrenal glands quickly.
  • Good posture:  Harvard research has shown that an upright and open posture can reduce cortisol levels quickly.   Your physical and emotional body align with one another, a straight spine is confident.  Being bent over, indicates fear to the body.  Put a smile on your face, it will also reduce cortisol levels.

4. Supplementation for Adrenal Health

Supplements that help tired adrenal glands.

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Consuming 1–2 tablespoons of fish oil daily helps reduce inflammation and supports the immune system. Caution is advised for those on blood-thinning medications; consult your doctor."
  • L-Tyrosine: This amino acid supports thyroid function, the synthesis of adrenaline, and is a dopamine precursor. Taking 1000 mg in the morning should improve energy and bring a sense of normalcy, particularly for those experiencing fatigue or have thyroid deficiency. .
  • L-Carnitine: At a dosage of 2 grams per day (1 gram in the morning and 1 gram in the evening), L-carnitine helps transport fatty acids into the mitochondria, boosting energy production and cognitive function .
  • Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng): Known for its adaptogenic properties, eleuthero gently stimulates the body and aids in overall stress management .
  • Adaptogens: Other beneficial adaptogens include ashwagandha and maca root. These natural substances help the body adapt to stress, modulating cortisol levels and supporting adrenal health .

By combining dietary improvements, strategic supplementation, and lifestyle practices, you can support your adrenal glands and restore energy levels. Start with these changes gradually, listen to your body's response, and consult with a healthcare professional before beginning new supplements, especially if you have pre-existing conditions.
